MSI announces improvements to its GE60 and GE70 gaming laptops

MSI has announced a series of enhancements to its portable gaming GE60 and GE70 laptops to further increase performance. These laptops will become part of next Intel Ivy Bridge upgrade as well as the faster Nvidia GTX 660M graphics core, which is an improvement of around 15% over the previous GTX 560M and GT 650M. They will still keep thered Killer Gaming Networking, Steeel Series keyboard, sound with Audio Boost and 4 speakers to make their laptops a reference model for those seeking gaming and mobility capabilities.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M card features 384 CUDA cores and a total of 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, which leads these laptops to get P11.500 points in 3D Mark Vantage. It also adds an SSD drive with mSATA connectivity that increases read/write rates up to 450 MB/s, so demanding more from a notebook will be difficult.

No one knows the date of release of this update on both laptops, but prices are expected to remain the same.

Amazon announces four new models of its Kindle Fire tablet

The devices are available in two sizes: 7 and 8.9 inches. One of them has 4G connectivity via LTE, for which Amazon will sell its own data plan.

When we began to speculate on the Amazon presentation today, the most optimistic talk was of two new models of the Kindle Fire. But Jeff Bezos and company decided to surprise, launching four new versions of the tablet, including one with 4G connectivity.

The event, which also announced new versions of Kindle readers with eInk screen, set off with the announcement of the renewal of the most basic Kindle Fire, it was launched last year for $199. The 2012 device includes twice the RAM, 40% faster processor than the previous one and a battery with more power. The price was also modified, down $40 and staying at $159. The device can be pre-order today, being delivered on September 14.

But the real bet is on the new Amazon tablet “Kindle Fire HD” models with higher resolution screens and WiFi connectivity enhancements. HD devices, available in a 7-inch version and 8.9-inch, has an OMAP 4470 processor from Texas Instruments, a high-resolution screen and a special treat for me at least (laminated to eliminate glare and eliminating the gap between the LCD and the glass that covers it), 16GB of storage and WiFi connectivity (dual band 2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth.

The 8.9-inch model is the new jewel of Amazon and the center of attention during the presentation by Bezos, highlighting its good performance (compared to processors like the NVIDIA Tegra 3) and the quality of its hardware. For example, it was noted that the 8.9-inch screen has a resolution of 1900 x 1200 pixels, reaching 254 pixels per inch (ppi). Nothing was said about the screen resolution of the 7-inch model. The new tablets also feature an audio system based on two speakers using Dolby Digital Plus.

Both models of the Kindle Fire HD will arrive in two dates: the 7-inch version will be available on September 14 (with pre-purchase today) for $199. In contrast, the 8.9-inch model will go on sale Nov. 20 for $299. Both models have 16 GB of storage.

The new direction of Amazon

The latest announcement from Amazon, and to which they devoted less time in the presentation of Jeff Bezos, is perhaps the most important. Speaking about the most common prices for a tablet ($499), Bezos said the company was asked what they could put on a tablet at that price and the answer was: 4G connectivity.

So they created the Kindle Fire HD with a 8.9-inch screen, 32GB of internal storage and 4G connectivity via LTE, which will be sold at the “regular” price of $499. The main service, and the true commitment of Amazon, is that the company will begin offering special data plan for this product. For $49.99 per year, Amazon will deliver LTE connection to the user, with 250 Mb of monthly data usage, 200 GB of cloud storage and $10 to spend in the Amazon AppStore.

The important thing is that Amazon will begin marketing its internet access so far offered for free (although it was only available on the Kindle 3G for some models), effectively becoming an internet provider and challenging the rest of the market with a complete increasing ecosystem: sells the devices at low cost, providing them content (books, apps, music, series and movies) and now also offers internet access.

Unfortunately all the Kindle Fire services are limited to the United States, it was not unannounced any eventual release to other markets.

Samsung unveiles the Galaxy Note II

The South Korean company unveiled the revamped version of its hybrid between tablet and smartphone, with a design similar to Galaxy S III

The Samsung Galaxy Note II comes a year after the first model, with completely redesigned: bigger screen (5.5”) and an improved S Pen.

The layout resembles the Galaxy SIII. In fact, it is made from the same materials and colors. Its dimensions are 151.1 mm x 80.5 x 9.4 mm. The company did well to narrow the housing and reduce the weight to 180 grams.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II has a Super AMOLED HD screen of 5.5”, with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels.

The interior carries a quad-core Exynos processor at 1.6 GHz and a Mali-400MP GPU.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II, which follows the launch of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, will be offered in three versions: 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The storage space can be expanded with a microSD card up to 64GB.

The device has two cameras: 8MP rear and 1.9 MP front for video conferencing. Both record video in Full HD.

You can connect to 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi.

The stylus that comes with the device, the S Pen, added enhancements related to ergonomics and accuracy. It is longer and thicker for more comfortable use.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II rolls out with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google’s operating system for mobile devices.

The dedicated device adds new software. The main programs are highlighted by Air View to preview documents by placing the S Pen over (Photo) Popup Note opens a window at any time to write a quick note. This can be done even when you are in the middle of a call; Quick Command to launch applications with a flick of the S Pen, and Screen Recorder to record screen activity and screen sharing.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will go on sale from October at a price not yet confirmed.

Apple discontinues the17-inch MacBook Pro

Apple made a move quickly and quietly that few noticed.

After the flashy IOS 6 ads, Apple Maps, Siri and improving the next generation of Macbook Pro with Retina Display, Apple took the veteran 17-inch MacBook from its list of products.

We began to wonder why we did not hear the news or announcements of new enhancements and features of this laptop, but now it makes more sense.

The company removed it from its website this much alluded notebook, probably due to the limited success that comes with the big, heavy 17-inch Mac among the vast majority of people. And many are turning to the smaller models like the MacBook Air or 13-inch, leaving far behind even 15 inch laptops.

The news is already mentioned on several websites that are specialized in first person covering the event from the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2012 from Apple.

Surely this represents a sad loss for those working with these greater size and resolution systems, such as designers, and post production technicians  from different areas.
