How to Automatically Login to Windows 11

If your PC never leaves your house and you really don’t need a password, enabling automatic login will save you the trouble of typing your password every time you turn on or restart your PC. Here’s everything you need to know to enable automatic login in Windows 11.

You generally shouldn’t use automatic login.

Logging in automatically potentially exposes your sensitive data to anyone who has physical access to your PC. It’s not as bad as completely removing your Windows 11 password, but it still presents an unnecessary risk.

Anyone with physical access to your PC will likely have full administrative control, meaning they can recover your Microsoft password if they really want to. From there, it’s simple to gain access to your Microsoft account and everything stored in it.

If you are going to use automatic login, we recommend that you use a local account.

If you just don’t like typing in a password, consider using Windows Hello webcam login.

How to Automatically Login to Windows 11

Enable the option to bypass login
Windows 11 still supports automatic sign-in — the option is disabled by default. We will need to use Registry Editor (Regedit) to adjust a few things to enable it again.

The Windows Registry is essential to the functioning of the Windows 11 operating system and most applications you will install.

You need to be careful when editing the registry as an incorrectly deleted or changed value can result in serious errors or even a crashing PC. You should familiarize yourself with the Windows Registry a little before proceeding, if you are not already familiar with it.

Click the Start button, type “regedit” in the search bar and press Enter or click “Open”.

Navigate to the following address by pasting this link into Regedit’s address bar:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\PasswordLess\Device

Then double-click on “DevicePasswordLessBuildVersion”, then change the value data from “2” to “0” and click “OK”.

Changing the value from 2 to 0 is what enables automatic login. Our work on the registry is complete and you can close Regedit.

Activate automatic login in Windows 11

Modifying the registry was the hard part of this job. Now you just need to enable local login. Press Windows + R to open the run window, type the following and press Enter or click “OK”.

netplwiz

Select your account, uncheck the box next to “Users must enter a username and password to use this computer” and click “Apply”.

You need to enter your username and password on the next screen. If you are using a Microsoft account to log in to Windows, the password you need to provide is your Microsoft password.

The next time you restart your computer, you will automatically log in directly to your chosen account. Just keep in mind the security implications.
